Diana Gabriela Stancu on Studying Architecture in Berlin

Diana Gabriela Stancu traces her interest in architectural heritage back to a story a lecturer told in class. Originally from Romania, she now studies MA Architecture & Spatial Practices at Whitecliffe University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, where she’s exploring how her interests in heritage, materials, photography and drawing can inform the way she designs.

How a conservation class shaped Diana’s architecture thesis

The story came up in a third-year class on conservation and restoration. Hearing the lecturer talk about their professional experience made Diana want to pursue the field after her bachelor’s degree. She made conservation and restoration the focus of her thesis, which became her favorite project.

She especially enjoyed building physical models and seeing the design evolve week by week. In desk crits, she talked through her ideas with her advisors while the project was still taking shape.

“For the first time, I felt confident enough to take a project through all its phases, from the initial research and concept development to the final design.”

What studio work taught Diana about designing

One of the skills Diana values most is being able to take a vague idea and turn it into a clear architectural concept. Working through different versions of a design taught her to use feedback and give an idea time to develop.

Her advice to first-year architecture students is to stay curious, learn from mistakes and give yourself time to find your own way of approaching a project.

Student life in Berlin, from the studio to Tiergarten

Berlin’s art history, cultural scene and opportunities for young architects drew Diana to the city. Course site visits took her beyond the studio, and conversations with classmates and lecturers from different backgrounds introduced her to new ways of thinking about architecture. When she has time for a walk, Tiergarten is her favorite spot.

“Whitecliffe has given me the freedom to explore my interests, learn from encouraging people, and discover the kind of architect I want to become.”
