MA Interior Design

Interiors is a distinct language of its own. The MA Interior Design teaches that language to graduates of architecture and other creative disciplines, translating what they already know into an understanding of how people inhabit and experience space. Students develop the design sensibility, spatial fluency and critical awareness of interiors discourse the specialization demands. The program supports graduates in acquiring the advanced knowledge needed to establish their own unique position within the discipline. Architecture and Interior Architecture are protected professions in Germany. This program does not qualify graduates for registration with the Chamber of Architects.

Study Interior Design in Berlin

Program Outline

Across two years, students carry their design knowledge from architecture or a related design field into interiors, building disciplinary knowledge through design and research at every stage. The first year grounds students in interior design, through studio projects, research seminars and a fast-paced charrette, alongside courses in construction, visualization, lighting and acoustics and professional practice. In the second year, students apply and deepen their acquired skills further with studio projects, research seminars and another charrette, punctuated by courses in communication, furniture design and exhibition design. In the final semester, students take a critical and self-directed position to complete their Master Thesis and Master Thesis Design Project on a topic of their own choice.

Key Information

The MA Interior Design is for applicants with a degree in architecture or a related design field. The program teaches interiors from the fundamentals up, building disciplinary knowledge and the professional-level expertise the specialization demands.

Graduate Outcome

Graduates of the MA Interior Design work as employees or independent practitioners, across design offices, architecture firms, agencies, cultural institutions and beyond, equipped with the practical and theoretical knowledge that the profession demands.

Admission Requirements

To apply for the MA Interior Design program, applicants need a Bachelor’s degree in a field related to Interior Architecture/Interior Design, such as Architecture or another closely related design discipline with significant spatial design coursework.

Applicants are required to submit the standard MA application documents, including:

Official certificates and transcripts
Official English or German translations where required
Proof of English language skills at CEFR level B2 or above
CV
Letter of motivation
Portfolio PDF with a maximum of 10 works from previous studies and/or professional experience in architecture or other related field (including technical drawings).

German language knowledge is not required for this English-taught program.

No. The MA Interior Design is not a consecutive program to the BA Interior Architecture/Interior Design, it does not qualify graduates for registration with the Chamber of Architects.
