Architecture

In this course students have developed a project that deals with the transformation of the Schwerbelastungskörper site in Tempelhof/Schöneberg (Berlin). The Schwerbelastungskörper was designed by Albert Speer, Hitler’s chief architect, and functioned as a test object for measuring loads exerted on the soil by large buildings which were planned for the “Neue Welthauptstadt” of Germania once The Nazi’s had won the war.

Each student has been encouraged to form an individual concept based on a thorough site analysis and research into its burdened history. The projects had to follow a (personal) narrative that is born out of the site’s history and its inherent potential and then transforms into an urban or spatial strategy that is developed through all design stages.
